For generations, residents of the neighborhood known as “The Hill” went without the basic police and fire services Courtland provided elsewhere, so in 1981 they voted to incorporate and fund their own. Today the town runs on a mayor and council, celebrates Founders Day every August and honors its seniors each spring with Unity Day. U.S. Highway 72 and State Highway 20 cross the north side of town.
